There are a lot of good mockup and wireframe software out there. A quick search on Google for “wireframe software” or “mockup software” will bring a wide palate of what’s available – from open source solutions to proprietary software, to complex design suites to ones that are easy to use. There are also some comprehensive lists and reviews that bring mockup software clashing head-on against each other with full blown feature comparisons.
We were looking for our prized mockup software that had to have at least two important features, the touch of stencil or sketch-effect – something we felt important to have for a variety of reasons – and the ability to create smart diagrams that explained various software systems, concepts or processes. While there were excellent UI interface design software that portrayed actual software windows and buttons, which we didn’t really want, and mockup software that had the sketch-effect which we did want but was poor in creating diagrams. Finally we came across SimpleDiagrams and quickly put it to the test. The software installed instantly – however it required Adobe Air which we already had pre-installed. On a quick note, Adobe Air is a great OS independent virtual environment. This is extra good news for us because we love to use FreeBSD and RedHat Linux systems and the thought that Simple Diagram would run on them was just sweet. After installing SimpleDiagrams, we quickly experimented with our first diagram. We created it in just 5 minutes without having to grope for non-comprehensible or hard to find buttons. It was dead easy. The following diagram illustrates our first Simple Diagram creation.
We also created a similar diagram on the closest competitor software to SimpleDiagrams which we present below.
The differences above were obvious to us. Simple Diagram is here to stay and we love it. A few more notable Simple Diagram features:
